ACI to Present the Chemistry of Clean "Live" at USA Science & Engineering Festival

  • Students Will Explore the Science of Product Formulation April 7-8 in DC
  • ACI Booth Supports New STEM Website, Exploration Clean

Washington, DC, April 2, 2018 – A simple activity will demonstrate how chemistry is essential for creating consumer products – specifically liquid hand soaps – at the American Cleaning Institute’s (ACI) booth during the USA Science & Engineering Festival April 7-8 in Washington, D.C.

Designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, creators and innovators, the Festival is a free, family-friendly expo that allows kids of all ages to participate in thousands of exhibits, experiments, and stage shows.

"To ACI and the cleaning products industry, science is core to our everyday business and innovation is critical for a sustainable future," says Melissa Grande, Associate Director of Sustainability. "We hope to show the festival visitors a unique space where ‘STEM can take you’ and inspire future innovators who may one day work in various critical roles both inside and outside our industry and within our companies."

At the ACI booth (#6436), students will visit a series of stations to learn about the function of several ingredients found in a liquid hand soap. By placing colored sand into a tube at each station, students will experience what it is like to "formulate" a product. At the end of the activity, each participant will find out how well their creation would clean if it were real. They’ll also have an opportunity to speak with ACI scientists.

ACI’s exhibit supplements the newly released Exploration Clean website, an online resource for children to learn about the science behind the formulation of cleaning products.

The USA Science & Engineering Festival, taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., is the country’s largest and only national science festival and was developed to inspire our nation’s youth to seek out careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

ACI first participated in the event in 2016. Related video and classroom activities – for teachers and students – are available online at www.cleaninginstitute.org/STEM.
