Ask ACI: Laundry Load Size

Share

Q. How full is too full when it comes to a load of laundry?

A. You want to aim for full loads when you do your wash, which will save energy, water and your time. However, overloading your washer or dryer could damage these expensive appliances or keep your clothes from getting clean. How much you can put into your washer for one load of laundry is going to depend on your machine.

  • Front Load Washer - Put your hand in vertically, like you're giving a handshake. Your hand should fit comfortably between the clothes and the top of the drum. If it doesn't, the machine is too full.
  • Top Load Washer - The clothes shouldn't be piled higher than the agitator, or about 2/3 full if there's no agitator.

As always, follow the manufacturer's instructions when it comes to how much clothes to put in a load of laundry, as it will depend on the machine's capacity.

FAQ

Are there some clothes that need more space than others?

Some items, like delicates, benefit from having more space to reduce the wear and tear from friction.

How can I tell if the washing machine is overloaded?

If the washing machine is vibrating a lot or making more noise than usual, it's a sign that either it is too full or unbalanced. It can also cause issues like clothes not getting clean or liquid laundry packets not being able to dissolve as intended.

Can I wash bedding in my home washing machine?

Yes, you can wash comforters, bedspreads and other bedding if it fits comfortably. Check the fabric care label to make sure the bedding is machine washable. If you are washing pillows, wash them two at a time to help balance the load. If the bedding does not fit, a laundromat usually has larger machines that fit more in a single load.
