  • Program Seeks to Develop Roadmap to Increase Number of Cleaning Products that Use Sustainable Ingredients

The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) announced a new initiative to define and drive the use of more sustainable feedstocks in cleaning products ingredients and products throughout the industry.

The Sustainable Feedstocks Initiative was announced during ACI’s 2023 Annual Meeting & Industry Convention.

The program is aimed at creating a definition of sustainable feedstocks and developing a roadmap to increase the number of cleaning products on the market that use more sustainable ingredients.

Under the leadership of Nathan Sell, ACI Senior Director of Sustainability, and working with its member companies, ACI and Anthesis Group created a series of guidance documents to assist members in understanding current risks and trends with common cleaning ingredient feedstocks, selecting feedstocks relevant to their company, and developing a roadmap with clear goals that can be met in a three-to-five-year timeframe.

ACI is asking participating members to:

  • Identify relevant feedstocks, risks, and sustainability opportunities across cleaning ingredient portfolios
  • Increase the use of more sustainable feedstocks and feedstocks created with more sustainable production practices across cleaning ingredient portfolios
  • Collaborate across the cleaning products value chain to drive increased transparency, availability, and adoption of more sustainable feedstocks

Each of the top feedstocks identified in this Initiative have goals for members to meet over a 5-year period. Participating members will be recognized for their commitments to increasing the sustainability of the raw ingredients they use to make cleaning products.

For the purposes of this initiative ACI is defining a sustainable feedstock as a raw or recycled material available to meet the requirements of the cleaning product industry today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

“More sustainable” feedstocks reduce emissions, value nature, have increased transparency, and/or contribute positively to the well-being of the global community.
