ACI met with many of the 1500 attendees at the National Association of School Nurses’ 49th Annual Conference. Nurses were asked to provide comments about their concerns were about student health and why teaching handwashing is important. Two of the nurses shared that germ reduction is important to school nurses "because it affects student attendance" and "healthy kids are great learners!"

EPA should focus its regulatory attention on intended uses of chemicals it assesses, rather than trace amounts of materials not intentionally added to products. In comments submitted to EPA, ACI specifically addressed the chemical 1,4 dioxane, which the EPA has admitted that it’s “unlikely that 1,4-dioxane is intentionally used in formulations of currently available commercial and consumer products.”​

Newly published research shows that the use of antibacterial soaps can reduce the spread of harmful bacteria – that often leads to foodborne illness – more effectively than using non-antibacterial soaps. “This research provides strong evidence that antibacterial soaps are significantly more effective than non-antibacterial soaps in reducing Shigella on the hands and its subsequent transfer to ready-to-eat foods,” the authors write.

In 2013, ACI launched their KEY Pledge campaign, a program aimed at increasing education and awareness for safe handling and usage of single-load liquid laundry packets. Today, ACI announced that the program has garnered more than 39,000 pledges since launching 10 months ago for consumers to “Be the KEY” to a safe laundry room and routine. ACI also announced the first-ever KEY Pledge sweepstakes winner, Cynthia Moreno of Harlingen, Texas.

Three Litchfield, MN high school students are showing the nation’s capital how to scare away “handwashing horrors” – just in time for Halloween. Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, the American Cleaning Institute and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences collected over 1,600 pairs of colorful gloves and mittens, in all shapes and sizes for the Warm Hands, Warm Hearts project. These gloves, mittens and soap bars are being sent to the Sandy Relief Center in the Borough of Sayreville, New Jersey. This community was one of the hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy.

Researchers exploring the relationship between asthma and exposure to consumer products and product ingredients say the database of current studies is not sufficiently robust to demonstrate a causal relationship between product exposures and new-onset asthma. These are some of the findings from a report summarizing discussions at the Asthma Science Forum, a 2011 gathering sponsored by a group of industry trade associations.

The U.S. oleochemical industry will continue to be hard hit by the EPA’s policymaking on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2), according to ACI. The Institute says EPA has dismissed the concerns of the domestic oleochemical industry relating to the RFS2 impact on the price and availability of animal fats, which are key feedstocks in some ACI member products.

Detergent manufacturers are re-emphasizing the importance of keeping single unit dose laundry detergents out of the reach of children in the wake of recent reports about children accidentally ingesting these products. In addition to making educational materials on safe and proper laundry use widely available to families and caregivers, the American Cleaning Institute says manufacturers are closely examining incident reports and other details associated with reports of accidental ingestions.

In light of a Canadian government review of a key antibacterial ingredient, the American Cleaning Institute reminded consumers that triclosan has a decades-long track record of safe and effective use in personal care and hand hygiene products. After a preliminary screening assessment of triclosan by Health Canada and Environment Canada, officials there reiterated that triclosan-containing products are safe for consumers to use.

Spring cleaning is still a tradition for many Americans – 62 percent of those surveyed say spring cleaning is an annual ritual in their home. According to new research from ACI, 73 percent of those who spring clean strongly or somewhat agree that it’s a tradition worth keeping. But 13 percent of this group (18% of men, 8% of women) strongly or somewhat agree that if it wasn’t for spring cleaning, they would probably never clean their home!

An overwhelming number of students (89%) aged 8-17 say they always wash their hands after going to the bathroom at school. But time constraints, a lack of cleanliness and a shortage of supplies are among the major barriers to students washing their hands at school more often. These findings are from an online survey of children aged 8-17 and of parents of children within that age group conducted for the American Cleaning Institute.

Massachusetts legislation aimed at improving health in schools would improperly ban cleaning products that are effective in reducing the triggers that cause asthma suffering, according to ACI. ACI testified September 13, 2011 against three bills that would require designated state officials to create a list of environmentally preferred cleaning products. Additionally, some chemicals could improperly be designated as “asthmagens” based on suspect criteria.

A new poll finds that the vast majority of Americans uses antibacterial soap and finds it to be a useful tool to prevent the spread of germs. And two-thirds of Americans would be “angry” at any government attempts to ban the products. The poll, released by the American Cleaning Institute and the Personal Care Products Council, reports that 83% of consumers should have the choice as to whether or not to purchase these products.

But the rules still require more revisions to make them manageable and workable for industry, consumers and regulators alike. California’s proposed regulations for “safer consumer product alternatives” are bureaucratic in the extreme, resource intensive for California government and the regulated community, punitive and adversarial, according to the American Cleaning Institute. In comments to the state’s Department of Toxic Substances Control, ACI said the proposals need significant revision and urged the agency to work in a cooperative fashion with stakeholders to develop effective and efficient regulations.

In the latest observational study sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute®, 85% of adults washed their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% in 2007. The 85% total was actually the highest observed since these studies began in 1996. The results were announced at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, an infectious disease meeting sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology.

75% of Americans say they regularly engage in spring cleaning, according to The Soap and Detergent Association’s (SDA) 2008 Spring Cleaning Survey, conducted by International Communications Research (ICR). Consumers should continue to use antibacterial personal care/cleaning products in the home with confidence, according to the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA), The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA), and a leading health expert, Dr. Charles Gerba. They were responding to the American Medical Association's (AMA) discussion that could dissuade consumers from using an important defense against disease-causing germs.
