Webinar Presented by Ramboll September 29, 2021 - 1-2 PM EDT Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, use of certain topical antiseptic compounds—specifically benzalkonium chloride (BAC), benzethonium chloride (BZC) and chloroxylenol (PCMX)—had increased due to the phase-out of triclosan and triclocarban in soaps and other cleaning products. Interest in potential environmental effects of such compounds has further increased with the pandemic-related expansion in antiseptic usage. On behalf of ACI, Ramboll completed an environmental safety assessment for the target antiseptic compounds, as a proactive measure to provide an appropriate science-based context for future environmental monitoring results.  A manuscript detailing this assessment is now being finalized. This webinar will highlight the approaches developed and tools applied to address the challenges of predicting future target compound concentrations in multiple media and interpreting ecological hazards. Of particular interest are methods to quantify the (low) bioavailability of cationic surfactants in environmental media. As well as informing scientific opinion about triclosan replacement compounds, this work may be useful to member companies seeking to bring new antiseptics or other cationic surfactant-containing products to market.
