ACI Spreads the Word to FCCLA Conference Attendees about "Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP!"

FCCLA logoDuring the week of July 6th, 2015 Martha Chapin the Associate Director of Education and Jenn Coolidge, the Project Director of Education from the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) participated in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. ACI is a long-time supporter of this student vocational organization and has been exhibiting at and conducting workshops at this Conference for 14 years.

FCCLA’s theme for this year’s Convention: "Together We Are… Healthy" was a perfect fit ACI’s promotion of the Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP National Awards Program. What an incredible opportunity it was for both Martha and Jenn to meet with thousands of FCCLA chapter members and advisers who came by the ACI booth to learn more about our programs and educational materials!

Those that stopped by were eager to learn what the cleaning products industry is doing to promote handwashing in schools and how their chapter or school could earn $5,000.00, national recognition and an all-expense paid trip for three to Washington, DC just by submitting a one page summary of their student led activity promoting handwashing.

FCCLA 2015 WorkshopHealthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP is a joint initiative of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ACI to improve students’ handwashing habits, which can result in reducing absenteeism and help keep school communities healthy. During Monday’s, workshop "Clean Hands Can Earn Cash for Your FCCLA Chapter!" this year’s Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP National Awards Recipient and FCCLA Adviser Marcine Elder from Fulda High School, (Minnesota), shared the steps her students took to earn their second Healthy Schools, Healthy People Award! In 2011, Fulda’s Jr. FCCLA Chapter earned the Award for the first time and Marcine’s students were beyond thrilled to earn the award a second time in 2015.

After the workshop and during booth visits, Martha and Jenn were asked over and over again, "What’s the catch, it sounds so easy?" The answer was always the same. There is no "catch". They were directed to the website and were even given the one page summary from Fulda’s 2015 and 2011 awards applications as an example of how their activities were documented to earn the Award. So many of those visiting the booth remarked that they were "already teaching handwashing!" and they were told, "Go to the website, review the requirements, write a one page summary and submit it by January 31, 2016." ACI is hopeful that the promise of: "We will definitely be submitting an application for next year’s award!" come to fruition, because as everyone knows, proper handwashing is vital to keeping students healthy and in school so they can continue to learn!
