  • 40+ Year Industry Veteran Honored at 2007 SDA Convention

WASHINGTON, DC – February 1, 2007 – Judith H. Smeltzer, Director - State Government Relations for Philadelphia-based FMC Corporation, is the 2007 recipient of the The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Elva Walker Spillane Distinguished Service Award.

The award recognizes extensive or exceptional service to SDA, which promoted the growth and interests of the Association and the industries it represents; and the exercise of outstanding leadership within the Association. The Award was presented during SDA’s 2007 Annual Meeting and Industry Convention in Boca Raton, Florida.

On accepting the award, Mrs. Smeltzer complimented the Association on its long-term, science-based approach to legislative and regulatory issues and noted that was the foundation for its reputation, credibility and success.

Mrs. Smeltzer joined FMC in 1963 and has served the company in various business, regulatory, communications, public affairs and government relations positions.

“For more than 30 years, Judy Smeltzer has been heavily involved in SDA committees, programs and activities,” said Ernie Rosenberg, SDA President & CEO. “She has tirelessly lent her sweat equity to promoting and defending the interests of SDA and our industry at-large, and the role our products have played in enhancing cleaning products and practices.”

In 1974, Mrs. Smeltzer served as chair of SDA’s first Detergents in Depth symposia, which brought together industry, government and consumer representatives in an open forum on detergent trends and regulations.

In the years since, she has been active in a number of SDA committees, including Government Affairs, Consumer Education and Public Relations. She has also played an invaluable role in SDA’s phosphate defense efforts. Throughout much of her career, Mrs. Smeltzer served as FMC’s prime spokesperson on phosphate related issues. From 1998-2002, she chaired the North American Phosphate Industry Forum.

She also manages FMC’s philanthropy programs including being actively involved with FMC’s support of arts and culture institutions in Philadelphia.

Mrs. Smeltzer represents FMC on the American Chemistry Council State Affairs Committee and is currently the chairman, a position she has held since 2004. Additionally she is vice-chairman of the New York Chemical Alliance, secretary/treasurer of the Pennsylvania Chemical Industry Council and is actively involved in several chambers and business organizations.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University. She resides in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The SDA Distinguished Service Award is named in honor of the late Elva Walker Spillane, the former National Purity LLC chief executive who served on SDA’s Board for 20 years.
