Survey Summary: 2/3 Still Regularly Spring Clean

The following questions were asked of 1,002 American adults (501 men and 501 women). The independent consumer research study was completed February 13-16, 2009, on behalf of The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA), by Echo Research. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent.

Do you regularly engage in spring cleaning?

Results:

  • Yes (68%)
  • No (32%)

  • Spring cleaning remains a popular activity with more than 2/3 of the population participating.

Results:

  • Effectiveness (87%); up from 75% in 2008
  • Cost (74%); up from 52% in 2008
  • Convenience (71%); up from 49% in 2008
  • Multi-purpose (67%); up from 54% in 2008
  • Time-saving (64%); up from 45% in 2008
  • Sustainability benefits (61%); up from 38% in 2008
  • Scent or fragrance (48%); up from 46% in 2008
  • Brand (31%); down from 39% in 2008

Insights:

  • Top qualities are directly related to saving time and money, making the term home economics more relevant than ever.

When it comes to cleaning your home, have economic conditions influenced you in any of the following ways:

Results:

  • Economic conditions have influenced one’s cleaning habits (78%)
  • You do more cleaning yourself instead of hiring a cleaning service (60%)
  • You buy less expensive cleaning products (44%)
  • You buy fewer cleaning products (33%)
  • You mix your own cleaning products (22%)
  • You clean less frequently (17%)

Insights:

  • The economy is stimulating change when it comes to Americans’ cleaning behaviors.
