Chemical Industry Veteran Stewart Gloyer Receives SDA Distinguished Service Award

  • Spent Years with Witco, Goldschmidt Chemical Firms
  • Served as Leader on SDA Oleochemical Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 4, 2008 – Dr. Stewart Gloyer, who recently retired from Evonik Goldschmidt Corporation after nearly 40 years of service in the chemical industry, is the 2008 recipient of The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Elva Walker Spillane Distinguished Service Award.
The award recognizes extensive or exceptional service to SDA, which promoted the growth and interests of the Association and the industries it represents; and the exercise of outstanding leadership within the Association. The Award was presented during SDA’s 2008 Annual Meeting and Industry Convention in Boca Raton, Florida.

“Stew Gloyer spent many years working on issues important to the oleochemicals industry at-large, including terms as chair and vice chair of the SDA Oleochemicals Committee,” said Ernie Rosenberg, SDA President and CEO. “He was a member of our Strategic Advisory Committee and its predecessor committees. He also served as the SDA/North American representative on the organizing committee for the 2002 World Oleochemical Conference.

“His knowledge, candor, passion and wisdom helped shape and inform SDA programs and activities for more than a decade. We are grateful for his dedication and service to SDA over the years.”
Dr. Gloyer served in a number of technical and leadership positions at the former Witco Chemical Corp., including stints as Vice President of the Olefin/Styrenics, Basic Oleochemicals, and Technology and Business Development Units.

In the latter part of his career, he was an executive for Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation (now Evonik Goldschmidt), including Vice President of Operations Planning and Nitrile Amines and Head of Production & Technology, North America Business Unit, Care & Surface Specialties.

Dr. Gloyer retired as Director of Evonik Degussa Site Excellence Programs/North America in September 2007.

“It is fitting that Stew Gloyer be selected to receive one of the SDA’s highest honors,” said Dr. Reinhold Brand, President of Evonik Goldschmidt Corporation. “Evonik Goldschmidt and the SDA have benefited tremendously from Stew’s remarkable knowledge and extensive experience. At Evonik, we highly valued his counsel based on 38 years in the oleochemicals industry. And I know the SDA is a better organization thanks to Stew’s participation in various positions and on numerous committees.”

Dr. Gloyer holds a BS in Chemistry, from University of Rochester; an MS and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Michigan; and an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago.

The SDA Distinguished Service Award is named in honor of the late Elva Walker Spillane, the former National Purity LLC chief executive who served on SDA’s Board for 20 years.
