Q. My son/daughter just left for college, and will be doing laundry for the first time. Any guidelines I can share?

A. Here are my top 5 tips for laundry rookies:

  1. Using more laundry detergent doesn’t make it cleaner. Read the label and use the recommended amount.
  2. Sort your laundry: whites, lights and darks in separate loads.
  3. Save energy! Do use cold water to wash, and don’t make the dryer work harder by doubling up wet loads.
  4. If it’s dirty – with mud, blood, beer, drool or vomit – WASH IT.
  5. Not sure if it’s washable? Read the label sewn into the garment.
