Ask Nancy - Baby Safety

Nancy Bock 2012

Nancy Bock, Senior Vice President of Meetings & Education at the American Cleaning Institute®

Q: September is Baby Safety Month. What advice do you have for safe cleaning at home?

A: A clean and safe home always puts child safety first! Here are my Top Ten Tips for using cleaning products safely when there are little ones in the home:

SAFE USE:

  1. ALWAYS read and follow label directions for proper use, storage and disposal.
  2. ALWAYS keep buckets containing cleaning solutions out of the reach of young children.
  3. NEVER mix cleaners and bleach – dangerous gases can be released!
  4. NEVER let your attention be diverted when using household cleaning products.
  5. If a spillage of any type occurs, clean it up immediately.

SAFE STORAGE:

  1. ALWAYS properly close all containers, especially those with child-resistant caps.
  2. ALWAYS store cleaning products in an area that is away from food and not accessible to young children or pets. Up high, out of sight and reach or in a locked cabinet is a good idea for families with curious young climbers
  3. ALWAYS put cleaning products away immediately after use. This will help limit accessibility to young children and help prevent accidental spills.
  4. NEVER store household cleaners in food containers. The contents could be mistaken for food by young children, the elderly and people with impaired vision.
  5. ALWAYS store products in their original containers and keep the original label intact. Product use and storage, disposal instructions, precautions and first aid instructions vary according to their ingredients. It can be dangerous to use a product incorrectly or to follow the wrong emergency procedures.
