California VOC Rules Could Alter Product Efficacy, Pose Labeling Challenges, ACI Says

ACI is urging California officials to take another look at proposed rules governing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in cleaning and fabric care products.

California’s Air Resources Board (ARB) wants to reduce VOC emissions in consumer products. But ACI says the proposed regulatory limits could alter some cleaning products’ efficacy. ACI also commented that a CA-based VOC labeling scheme would add clutter to labels, force companies to change product distribution networks, and increase compliance costs on manufacturers.

Further, ACI is asking for clarification of methodologies used to calculate VOC content in single use dryer sheets. ACI offered several revisions to the agency’s calculation methods.

ACI’s detailed comments, submitted August 16, 2010, are available on our State Chemical Management page.
